An adjustable steel prop height range should cover the installed support height after accounting for the formwork panel, beams, head and base. Floor-to-floor height alone is not the prop length. The prop also has to carry the calculated reaction at that particular extension and be used within its manufacturer’s adjustment instructions. Tianjin Easy Scaffolding’s internal steel-prop card gives an approximate 1.7–3.0 m range for some products, but it does not identify a universal model or capacity at every setting. The right selection begins with a section drawing, then checks minimum and maximum extension, screw travel, load chart, bracing and bearing. This guide gives a five-step selection method for buyers preparing a slab formwork RFQ. It keeps physical fit, rated load and construction sequence as separate checks so one convenient height number does not hide a support problem.

How to choose adjustable steel prop height range

Quick answer: Calculate the distance the prop must occupy between its actual bottom and top bearing points. Subtract the depth of beams, panels and other supported elements from the structural clear height as the approved formwork section requires. Choose a model whose permitted adjustment range includes that installed height, then check its rated load there.

A floor might measure 3.0 m between finished levels while the prop supports a beam below a slab panel. The prop height can therefore be shorter than 3.0 m. Conversely, a step, drop or uneven base can create several installed heights on one floor. Record each zone, not only a single storey-height value on a purchase form.

The UK HSE temporary-works guidance treats formwork and propping as planned temporary support. The project designer should define the load path and the stages of installation and removal. A supplier’s quoted height range is one component input, not the formwork design.

Steel prop sizes for slab formwork support

A prop size is more than its maximum reach. Compare its minimum closed height, maximum working height, inner and outer tube, pin arrangement, top and base plates, and the model’s load chart. Two props that both reach the same slab height can have different rated loads or adjustment details.

Use five selection checks:

  1. Installed height: Calculate the range needed in each slab zone.

  2. Model range: Verify the proposed prop can reach both extremes without exceeding manufacturer limits.

  3. Reaction: Compare the load chart at each planned extension with the engineer’s calculated value.

  4. Head and base: Check beam seating, plate contact and foundation support.

  5. Bracing and sequence: Confirm restraint, pour stage, striking and reshoring requirements.

The internal product card lists outer tubes around 56–60 mm, inner tubes around 40–48 mm, wall thicknesses around 1.8–2.4 mm and several finishes. These are historical range notes. Do not assume any combination is interchangeable with another prop or that a broad “2–5 ton” sales figure applies at every extension. Request the current model drawing and chart.

A short prop range can be useful where heights repeat closely; a wider range can accommodate more variation. The choice should also consider stock management and the number of model types on site. Fewer SKUs can simplify picking, but only if each installed height and reaction is actually covered. A universal stock choice made for convenience can leave a critical location outside its rated range.

Can one adjustable prop size support an entire slab?

Possibly, but only if its permitted height range and load chart cover every support location in the approved design. Beam zones, floor offsets and different reactions can call for more than one model. A single SKU can simplify stock management, but convenience cannot replace the height and load checks.

Check screw adjustment and load at height

Quick answer: The pin or coarse setting and the threaded screw adjustment work together to reach the installed height. Both have limits. Record the screw position on the design and compare the manufacturer’s load data at that setting. Do not extend a prop beyond its stated range to absorb a drawing or survey error.

The prop pin must be the intended part and correctly seated. The screw and nut should be in usable condition, with the permitted engagement. An extended screw can affect alignment and load transfer. If the beam above is eccentric or the base is uneven, those conditions need review by the project designer rather than a simple field adjustment.

The OSHA cast-in-place concrete rules address shoring plans, bearing and inspection in US work. They support the need to check actual installation, not just purchase the right nominal size. The responsible engineer must decide when the formwork can be stripped and whether reshoring is needed; the prop catalogue cannot make that decision.

Inspect props before erection and after dismantling. A hot dip galvanized, painted or powder-coated finish does not repair a bent tube or damaged thread. Isolate suspect pieces so the next crew does not rely on a model marking while overlooking its actual condition.

Send a prop schedule for quotation

Quick answer: Give the supplier a zone-by-zone schedule of installed heights and design reactions, together with head, base, bracing and quantity. Ask for model drawings and load charts covering the required settings. The project quotation should identify which prop serves each height group and how the order will be packed.

Send:

  1. Slab and beam sections with support heights and formwork depths.

  2. Prop grid, load cases and calculated reactions with units.

  3. Top plate or U-head detail and supporting beam size.

  4. Minimum and maximum extension needed in each zone.

  5. Finish, quantity, packing and any non-standard parts.

  6. Delivery destination, MOQ enquiry and term such as FOB Tianjin.

If a project combines steel props with ringlock shoring, formwork panels or H20 beams, identify which component carries each load. Do not treat a scaffold base jack as a substitute for a prop without a designed connection. Ask for in-house engineering support and project-based technical drawings when the supplier is asked to coordinate a complete formwork package.

For logistics, HS code 730840 may be relevant to shoring equipment; the importer should confirm classification. A 40HQ container loading quantity depends on prop models, packing length, pallet design and route weight limits. Request an order-specific loading plan. Standard items are planned at 15–25 days after deposit and customized items at 30–40 days, subject to the quotation’s production slot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the required steel prop height?

Measure the actual distance between the bottom and top bearing points shown on the formwork section. Account for the panel, beams, head and base rather than using floor-to-floor height directly. If the slab has steps or drop beams, calculate separate zones. Then check both adjustment range and rated load at each installed height.

What does maximum extension mean on a steel prop?

It is the upper setting stated for a specific prop model under its manufacturer’s instructions. The meaning of “extension” may refer to overall working height or exposed inner-tube length, so read the drawing and chart together. Do not use the last available screw thread as a substitute for a stated maximum working height.

Which load chart should I request for slab formwork props?

Request the chart for the exact model, pin and head configuration proposed in the quotation. It should show the rated load at the planned installed heights with clear units and assumptions. Give the supplier the project reactions and ask the responsible designer to review the chart against the formwork layout.

Request a height-specific prop quotation

Send the support sections, load schedule, quantities and destination through the project quotation contact page. The team can check candidate models and provide drawings, charts and an itemised offer.
